the city’s history and significance while also feeling peaceful and calm about just being here. I could see why she was so fond of the place.
Maybe I should just move here. San Francisco was a big city. It had plenty of activity and certainly had the kind of energy I was used to. I think I would like living here.
I gave Rick a call to see what he thought of the idea because he had actually lived here when he was a kid and all he did was talk about how much he hated it here because of the hippies and the bums…although the two weren’t mutually exclusive.
I guess it was just a question of what you were willing to put up with. If you wanted to live here, you had to put up with street urchins. If you wanted to live in a beach town, you had to put up with people denting your car. If you wanted to live in a suburb, you had to put up with boring. If you wanted to take a risk you had to give up your security. Everything has a price, I suppose.
I was definitionally homeless at this point so putting up with street urchins was clearly something I could handle and I think I’d actually fit in well out here. After all, in one way or another, these people were dreamers too.
Well, dreamers and burnouts.
Being in California the city attracted just as many dreamers as burnouts although I suppose I was both of those things at this point. How inspiring.
I couldn’t stay here though. If I stayed here I’d still have Chuck’s golf clubs and I really wanted to get rid of my only reason for ever having to golf again. Not only that, but our current similarities aside, I think the street urchins would have gotten on my nerves fairly quickly. Or I’d start hanging out with them. Either option was no good for anybody. Big cities like LA and San Francisco require an energy that isn’t needed elsewhere. You have to hustle and work quickly because there are so many different things going on you’ll miss all kinds of opportunities if you can’t keep up.
Out in the smaller cities and towns you didn’t have to have that because it just wasn’t necessary. Here all you need to start a business is a sign. Build up a reputation and you’re set because everyone knows everyone and they’ll all recommend you to each other. Really you don’t even have to be good since if you’re the only person in town who does a particular thing people will have to go to you.
The setting was different here too. You can go for a walk and enjoy the completely natural surroundings. People have huge yards and sometimes even ranches. You have wild turkeys crossing the road. It was a whole different world in every way possible.
Naturally the people here were different as well because they don’t have that big city mentality. You get people who are willing to take the
