the time for you, even if you’re just some random dude who happened to know their daughter.
David took the time for me because I worked with his daughter at my former job in LA. But if he were some city guy with ten million different work and family obligations, I’m sure he would have said he didn’t have the time to even talk to me without a second thought.
David was more than kind and hospitable though. He was asking me about what I was doing up this way and I slipped in the word “vacation” because I didn’t want him to think I was some sort of crazy person, just giving up my life under the flimsy pretense of returning my friend’s golf clubs. The fact that I thought I needed to lie about what I was doing out here was something I didn’t even want to think about though.
He, on the other hand, was interested in telling me about Jesus, which his daughter warned me about. It wasn’t a big deal to me though because I was raised Catholic so I was used to hearing about God and could actually keep up with him in terms of the bible which I think he found to be impressive.
Refreshingly though, David was not trying to convert me. There are plenty of religious types who are just looking to push their religion on other people as a means of control. But David wasn’t like that. Clearly, religion was a big part of his life and I think he just wanted people to see that so they could be affected in a similar manner. I suppose that all could have been his angle but it felt like there would be way better ways to go about it than that.
It made sense he was living out here though. Things were slower and
more relaxed. You had the time to sit back and think about how God was a part of everything, whether it was in the horses that craved your attention or just by looking around and feeling like you were in something that only a supernatural being could have created.
If you break it down though, religion is just another means for
for people to connect with each other. It gives them something in common with each other and makes them easier to relate to. They can talk about their religion and feel comfortable in finding someone else who shares similar goals which can be a scary and powerful thing if a person is hijacking a religion for their own purposes.
David brought it down to a personal level though, which was refreshing. We talked about how God worked in his own life and he told me about how he came to see and understand the power of God while mentioning ways that God could be doing the same thing for me.
And those specific circumstances and situations made it real. It was certainly more effective than just reading from the Bible and hearing about how awesome Jesus was in his day.
Although I told him I was raised Catholic I didn’t give him much more info than that, simply because I was a guest in his house and didn’t want to raise his ire. Not that I was about to tell him his
