beliefs were ridiculous and wrong or anything. It was just that my thoughts on God were a little bit…complicated.
Just knowing that there were people like David around was a comforting thought though. Whatever their motivations or reasoning, people like David made this a better world to live in. David may have been a very religious man, but he wasn’t helping me out because he wanted to convert me although I’m sure he wouldn’t have been against it. His main concern was in just helping me to help me and as far as I was concerned that was more religious than any bible story or sermon ever could be.
There simply weren’t as many people like that in the big cities. Maybe
it had something to do with having to have that city mentality which doesn’t give you the time to be doing such things. Maybe people felt like they just couldn’t be that nice in the city because there were so many who would just take advantage of such deeds. Or maybe big cities just inherently attracted jerks.
As I headed out I could see the appeal of being this far away from everything, and not just because there were people like David out here. What you lost in energy and opportunity you gained in perspective and utter beauty. The further I got from everything the more desolate things got…and the more beautiful the entire area became.
The northern part of California was gorgeous in a different way than the southern part. It still had the rolling hill that felt like they were going swallow you up and the sun was just as intense up here as it was further south. But there weren’t nearly as many people up here, so the natural surroundings were that much more prevalent. This area was also one of the best areas in the world to grow wine, and there were certainly plenty of people taking advantage of that fact. David mentioned that the temperature here was perfect for it and it seemed like everywhere you looked there was a grape field or a winery that had wine tastings or bottles of wine for sale. I was never a big wine guy, probably because it all tasted the same to me. I mean, wine connoisseurs will tell you they can tell the difference between an expensive and cheap bottle of wine but there have been plenty of times where the supposed experts were fooled. So that was a big reason I didn’t care for wine. If it all tastes the same then you’re just getting over on me by making me think I should buy a really expensive bottle. And I hate it when people get over on me.
Just being out here was invigorating though because I had never really seen or experienced nature like this. I wanted to get up to Oregon to unload these golf clubs, but I couldn’t resist stopping and just taking in everything. This was a side of nature that I had never seen before.
When I went through the Redwood Forests I was seeing nature on an entirely different and inspiring scale. The enormity of the trees is simply breathtaking. Horizontally the forest looks like it goes on forever while vertically the
